The bed is sacred…especially with an illness. Sleep is some of the most powerful medicine we’ve got. Your bed should be relaxing, inviting, soft, firm and cozy. Just plain somewhere you want to hang out in.
I recently overhauled ours.
Seven years ago we were sleeping on a pillow top mattress that had a dent on my side and a dent on Phillip’s side. We were waking up achy. You can deal with this for a few months, but one day you wake up and the crank overcomes you. That was the day we bought a new mattress.
We figured the issue was softness, so we walked into Sleep Train and said, “We want the firmest mattress you have.” The salesman said, “Really???”
We softened it up a bit with a memory foam topper from Target and it has been wonderful. Supportive. Soft. Ache-free.
Recently, the memory foam topper developed a dent where I sleep and a dent where Phillip sleeps. This coupled with a comforter perpetually at the base of the duvet cover was starting to make me frustrated. I so need our bed to be a refuge.
The Makeover
As I mentioned in this post, I’m in a home re-do phase right now. Our bed became first on the list. Here’s what got re-done:
- New memory foam mattress cover. I tried to go without, but we did in fact buy a REALLY firm mattress.
- New bed rails. I adore our headboard, but didn’t buy the matching rails initially. I assumed I’d use a dust ruffle. The dust ruffle always looked unkempt because our dogs crawl under the bed. We eventually took it off, but then things were really unsightly. Wayfair was amazing at ordering me the rails to match my headboard which are not a standard offer.
- New quilt-style comforter in “river” blue. This and the matching pillow covers were from Target.
- I topped off the bed with a knit throw blanket from pottery barn.
- Wall art from Crate and Barrel to sit above our headboard. I think it fits my river/modern cabin theme perfectly.
The finished product:
I adore my bed again. I find myself choosing to hang here and read in the evenings. It is relaxing, inviting, soft, firm and cozy!
