I met a woman a few months ago who’d had knee replacement surgery. She said that she tried everything under the sun to avoid surgery – all of the woo-woo and not-so-woo-woo stuff.
She finally relented to the operation when she could not longer walk. Before she spoke they showed a video of her post-surgery…dancing!
Sometimes we try hard to avoid the things that we need to surrender to and trust that something larger than we are is working it out. And even if it doesn’t work out, we’ll still be supported through that.
This woman and I shared a long hug of understanding because I too have tried all of the woo-woo and not-so-woo-woo stuff to avoid the inevitable, but this week I finally surrendered. I tell you more about that in the next few weeks.
In honor of the blessing that is surrender, I’ve pasted the lyrics to Sweet Surrender by Sarah McLachlan below. It is a beautiful song with lyrics that perfectly describe the journey of surrender…sweet surrender.
Sweet Surrender
By: Sarah McLachlanIt doesn’t mean much
It doesn’t mean anything at all
The life I’ve left behind me is a cold roomI’ve crossed the last line
From where I can’t return
Where every step I took in faith betrayed me
And led me from my homeAnd sweet surrender
Is all that I have to giveTake me in, no question’s asked
You strip away the ugliness that surrounds me
(Who are you?)
Are you an angel?Am I already that gone?
I only hope that I won’t disappoint you
When I’m down here on my knees
(Who are you?)And sweet surrender
Is all that I have to give
(Who are you?)And sweet surrender
Is all that I have to giveDon’t understand
The touch of your hand
I would be the one to fall
I miss the little things
I miss everything about youDoesn’t mean much
It doesn’t mean anything at all
The life I left behind me is a cold room
(Who are you?)And sweet surrender
Is all that I have to give
(Who are you?)And sweet surrender
Is all that I have to give
