Sitting in the Sun

I recently read Bossypants by Tina Fay. It is a really funny book. Toward the end of the book she has two chapters titled:

  • Remembrances of Being Very Very Skinny
  • Remembrances of Being a Little Bit Fat

Both are less than two full pages. Mainly a list of things she observed. All hilarious. The first thing on her “skinny” list was: “I was cold all of the time.”

That pretty much sums me up. Kiddos with VACTERL Association, like me, tend to be on the smaller side because of digestion issues, and when I went vegan, I unintentionally dropped a few pounds. I thought the cold thing was only me, but it seems more universal of this body type.

I bring up the cold thing because on Fridays I like to post about something that I’m grateful for. Happiness. Smiles. All the rainbow stuff. I also tend to share these posts on Rachael’s linkup titled Friday Favorite Things. This week I stayed true to theme and I asked myself, “What is my favorite thing right now?”

Sitting in the sun. By far.

Sun

View from the deck.

If the sun is out, I take at least 15 minutes every day to sit on our deck outside. It can be 74-degrees in our house and I feel like the only thing that will warm me up is a hot bath or basking in the sun.

The best sensation ever is the all-over tingles you get from sitting on a warm lounge chair and turning your face toward the sun. It feels like you’re being heated from the inside out.

My dogs love it too! Abbey will sit and sit and sit until she’s panting. And then sit some more until she flops over on her side with her tongue hanging out. That’s my girl!

My favorite meditation is sitting in the sun also. It’s simple: close your eyes and place your full attention on warmth. Feel it invade your toes, legs, torso, arms, fingertips, head and hair. As you move your attention from your toes up toward your head, picture the sun’s rays lighting up that area and clearing out any discomfort, stress or tension. Allow the warmth to turn to joy and relax into the sun’s energy. Stay in this bliss as long as you want.

The sun is a miracle that gets overlooked because it comes up each day. As spring gives way to summer, take a moment to pay your respects to the sun. It will definitely hug you back!

Just remember your sunscreen…
